Ohio State University Hires New Vice President For Student Life

Ohio State University has named Dr. Melissa Shivers its vice president for student life. Pending Board of Trustees’ approval, she will begin her new role on Jan. 9.

Shivers is currently the vice president of student life at University of Iowa as well as an adjunct professor of education policy and leadership studies. For a year, she served as interim associate vice president for diversity, equity and inclusion.

While at University of Iowa, Shivers hired the division’s first fundraising professional and helped coordinate the university’s first diversity, equity and inclusion action plan.

Shivers has had a long career in higher education. She held several administrative roles over seven years at University of Tennessee, Knoxville and ran multicultural programming at Clemson University and University of Georgia in years prior.

She began her career with her work in admissions, TRIO education talent search and multicultural programming at Georgia Southern University, where she received her bachelor’s degree in communication arts. She also earned a master of education in counseling and guidance services from Clemson followed by a PhD in counseling and student personnel services from the University of Georgia.
