Hampton University Offers Another Free Semester to Bahamian Students

After Hurricane Dorian struck the Bahamas in August, Hampton University opened its doors to 43 displaced students from the University of the Bahamas-North Campus. Now, as the fall semester draws to a close, Hampton University recently announced it will offer those students a second semester of free room, board and tuition.

“It’s a great feeling,” said Kirstoff Strachan to WAVY-TV news. “It’s a burden, one less thing to worry about. The burden’s lifted.”

Hurricane Dorian was the most severe tropical cyclone in the Bahamas’ recorded history, creating over $8 billion of damage for the country. The University of Bahamas hoped it would have its North Campus’ destroyed classrooms and dormitories repaired by spring, but due to the scope of the damage, the process is taking longer than expected.
