Robert Caslen has resigned as president of the University of South Carolina, The State reported. Caslen’s tenure at USC was brief, and despite him making some advancements for the school, his time was known for his public speaking gaffes.
Caslen will be replaced in the interim by former USC President Dr. Harris Pastides,
During Caslen’s tenure, the school froze tuition for two years in a row, hired its first Black provost, partnered with the military on cybersecurity, held in-person classes during the pandemic while keeping on-campus cases relatively low and implemented a saliva-based coronavirus testing system.
Caslen incorrectly congratulated 2021 graduates of the “University of California” during a recent commencement address. It was also discovered that his speech quoted parts of retired Navy admiral William McRaven’s speech without attribution.
