Brookdale Community College (BCC) has reached an agreement with its part-time faculty that gives the educators higher pay and more student time with professors, App reported.
"It was a perfect situation where we able to get something the students were asking for and also the extra pay the adjuncts wanted," said Brookdale president Dr. David Stout. "It was good for our students and good for adjuncts."
BCC officials recently ratified the first contract with the Brookdale Adjunct Faculty Chapter of the United Adjunct Faculty of New Jersey, which approved the deal with a 74-1 vote last week.
The contract – a six-year deal retroactive to July 1, 2019, that will run through the 2024-25 academic year – will result in higher pay in paychecks that come sooner and includes annual pay increases from $825 to $850 per credit for the 2019-20 academic year. Pay will eventually reach $985 per credit for the contract’s final year.
BCC was able to raise adjunct faculty pay by adding office hours for adjunct staff, who were not required to have office hours before. Adjunct staff will now be required to offer one hour of virtual office time a week, an hour for which they will be paid $46.50 per hour for the 2022-23 school year.
