Dr. Michael Beckerman
Beckerman currently serves as the Carroll and Milton Petrie Professor of Music and Collegiate Professor of Music at New York University, where he served as chair of the Department of Music from 2004 to 2013 and 2020 to 2022, and Global Research Initiative co-director from 2017 to 2020. Prior to his appointment at NYU, Beckerman was a distinguished professor at Lancaster University (2011–15) and a member of the music faculty at UC Santa Barbara (1992–2003) and Washington University in St. Louis (1982–1992).
A musicologist specializing in Czech and Eastern European music, with strong ties to ethnomusicology, composition and performance, Beckerman received his B.A. in music from Hofstra University and his M.A., MPhil and Ph.D. from Columbia University.
