Moving Beyond Hispanic Enrolling While Becoming Hispanic Serving at William Paterson University
The shift in our student population revealed structural and pedagogical concerns that led to the development of several task forces aimed at addressing and understanding how to better serve our increasingly diverse student population. Among them was the HSI task force, who among others, received charges by our University President, Richard Helldobler, asking us to recommend ways and strategies that our higher education institution could move beyond being a Hispanic enrolling institution towards becoming a Hispanic Serving one.

HSI by Choice or By Circumstance: Examining R1 Hispanic Serving Institutions
Representing 18% of the U.S. population, the growth of the Latinx population continues to grow and disperse throughout the nation. According to the Pew Research Center, the growth of the Latinx population accounts for more than half of the total U.S. population growth since 2010, with Texas, California, and Florida experiencing the largest share of the Latinx population growth. Similarly, higher education institutions throughout the nation, and within these specific states, have seen significant increases in Latinx student enrollment.

Marymount University Becomes Virginia’s First HSI
With 25.1% of its undergraduate population identifying as Hispanic, Marymount University became the first Hispanic-serving institution (HSI) in Virginia. Guilt, Fear, and Anger: The Juxtaposition of Being a Mexican Immigrant Professor
As an assistant professor at a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) in Texas, I feel a moral obligation to foster a supportive and safe learning environment for all my students – especially the targeted and most vulnerable populations. I want them to know that in my classroom, they should expect to feel safe and validated regardless of what is happening in society. Yet, I have been advised by many mentors to never talk politics and to always remain neutral. But this is not about neutrality.
